316 Vs 304: ASTM 316L(1.4404) is a low-carbon austenitic chromium-nickel-molybdenum steel. Due to the addition of 2-2.5% molybdenum, the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel 316L is significantly better than that of the standard austenitic grades 304 and 304L, SA573 Grade 65 hot rolled mild steel plate. The 1.4404 material is resistant to intercrystalline corrosion when welded! but not resistant to sea water. Best corrosion resistance is given with a polished surface. This material is comparable to 1.4401.
