ASTM A516 is also known as ASME SA516. The A516 / SA516 standard specification for pressure vessel plates, carbon steel, for moderate- and lower-temperature service. A grade A633Gr.D physical properties intended primarily for service in welded pressure vessels where improved notch toughness is required, and is normally found in moderate and lower temperature applications. All plates over 1-1/2″ Thick are required to be normalized. A516 Grade 70 steel is the most popular pressure vessel grade of steel plate in the industry.

The yield point of the steel structure determines the stress that the structure can withstand without permanent deformation. The minimum yield point of typical carbon structural steel is 235MPa. The minimum yield point of typical low-alloy high-strength steel is 345MPa. Therefore, according to the proportional relationship of its yield point, the use of low-alloy high-strength steel allows the stress to be 1.4 times higher than that of carbon structural steel. Compared with A633Gr.D physical properties, carbon structural steel, the use of low-alloy high-strength steel can reduce the size of structural parts and reduce weight.

Although A633Gr.D physical properties, low carbon steel has excellent plasticity, toughness and processing technology, its strength is low and its corrosion resistance is not strong enough. On the basis of ordinary low carbon steel, the low alloy structural steel with high strength, high toughness, good weldability and corrosion resistance can be obtained by adding a small amount of alloy elements and the total amount is less than 3%. Manganese is the main additive element in this kind of steel, and its content is about 1% ~ 1.6%.
